چکیده

Introduction Radioiodine is a safe and effective treatment for Graves’ disease. Iatrogenic hypothyroidism is very common after treatment, but its onset is unpredictable. Even a short episode of hypothyroidism can result in significant morbidity and ideally should be avoided. In Newcastle a standard dose of radioiodine (400MBq) is used, but for historical reasons two different protocols are used after radioiodine: Regimen A: regular clinical and biochemical monitoring and initiation of levothyroxine when serum thyroid hormones have normalized, and Regimen B: block and replace with Carbimazole and levothyroxine starting 2 weeks post-radioiodine and continuing for 6 months, then withdrawing Carbimazole, but continuing with levothyroxine long-term.

Radioiodine (131-I) treatment for Graves’ disease: Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation for patient personalized dose estimation

Background: Reliable estimation of radiation-absorbed dose is necessary to evaluate the benefits and the risks of radiopharmaceuticals used for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes in nuclear medicine. Materiel and Methods: This study included 47 patients treated with iodine-131 for Graves’ disease. A comparative study between Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation and MIRD formalism was carried out to ev...

Effects of treatment with radioiodine (¹³¹I) on the gonadal function of the hyperthyroid patients

Introduction: Hyperthyroidism is a relatively common disorder caused by different etiologies. Graves’ disease, and toxic-nodular goiter (Plummer’s disease) are among the most common causes. Treatment with radioiodine is considered to be the treatment of choice in many of the patients. Higher biological half-life of ¹³¹I in hyperthyroid patients as compared with patients with differentiate...

Onset age is associated with outcome of radioiodine therapy in Graves' disease.

Controversy remains regarding the optimal dose calculation with radioiodine therapy for patients with Graves' disease. Here, we focused our analysis on data concerning the patient's pretreatment background, an empirically set dose of radioiodine and the post-treatment thyroid function, and investigated those factors that affected the outcome. The subjects consisted of 38 patients diagnosed as h...

Graves' ophthalmopathy in patients treated with radioiodine 131-I.

BACKGROUND Radioiodine treatment of hyperthyroidism in Graves' disease patients may cause or aggravate the course of ophthalmopathy (GO). We evaluated the activity and severity of ophthalmopathy in patients who acquired GO following radioiodine therapy. MATERIAL AND METHODS Between 2003 and 2005, 763 Graves' disease patients (50.9% of the total number of 1,500 patients referred to our Departm...

Radioiodine therapy in Graves' disease: is it possible to predict outcome before therapy?

OBJECTIVE To assess the predictability of outcome and evaluate the factors that may lead to treatment failure in patients with Graves' disease who are treated with a single dose of radioiodine. MATERIALS AND METHODS This is a retrospective study of 123 patients (M: 42; F: 81) with Graves' disease who received radioiodine therapy with a single fixed (10 mCi) dose for hyperthyroidism. Pretreatm...
